The University Challenge was held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Central Time and part of September 22, 2011. During the University Challenge teams defended vulnerable web application technology while solving CTF challenges.
Congratulations to the St. Cloud State University team for winning the overall competition and having the highest score on the attack portion of the challenge! Congratulations to Dakota State University on taking top honors on the defend portion of the challenge.

Entry
All team members had to be registered to attend the AppSec USA conference September 22-23, 2011 in order to compete in the September 21 University Challenge. Student registration was $75.00 per student. Free food and beverage was provided during the University Challenge and all University Challenge participants received an OWASP University Challenge baseball hat. Winners received some awesome books (some author signed) as well.
Computer and Software Requirements
Each team member needed a notebook/laptop equipped with the following:
- BackTrack (CD-ROM or USB stick version)
- VMWare Player
- VirtualBox Player
- FTP Client (e.g., Filezilla)
- SSH Client (e.g., Putty)
- Network capture software (e.g., Wireshark)
- Nmap
- Firefox
- Firefox Add-ons: FoxyProxy, Cookie Editor, HackBar, Web Developer Toolbar, QuickJava, Tamper Data, Live HTTP Headers
- OWASP Zed Attack Proxy / AndiParos Proxy
- A hex editor
- Cryptool
- One's own testing tools
